Play Therapy

Play therapy is to children what counseling is to adults.  Play is the child’s natural way of communicating and it allows children to give expression to their experiences and emotions.  The relationship with the therapist gives children a sense of security when recreating emotionally stressful experiences.  Through their expression, the child’s play evolves until the child gains a sense of understanding and mastery over the situation.

Child & Adolescent Counseling

Children and adolescents come to therapy for many different reasons. Depending on the issue and the modality, the treament goals vary.  In individual counseling, some of the common issues I specialize in treating include depression, anxiety, school behavior issues, grief, and trauma or abuse.

Family Therapy

Family therapy brings children, adolescents, siblings, and caregivers into the therapeutic process.   The family is a unique structure that has it’s own patterns of communication and influences.  Family plays a crucial role in our emotional development and family therapy can improve family relationships.  Some of the issues I treat in family therapy include divorce, parent-child conflict, and sibling conflict.

Parenting & Coparenting Post Divorce

Co parenting, or shared parenting post divorce can be a very complex task. It is in the best interest of the children for parents to be able to work together to make parenting decisions. When parents are able to effectively communicate around child-rearing decisions, children are better able to adjust to divorce, feel more secure, and can learn how to peacefully solve problems for themselves.

EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma. EMDR is a set of standardized protocols that incorporates elements from many different treatment approaches.
In my practice, I have found EMDR to be beneficial in the treatment of panic disorders and anxiety, fears and phobias, trauma, and performance enhancement. I offer this research based treatment modality to children and adolescents.

Parent Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)

is an evidence-based treatment for young children with emotional and behavioral disorders that places emphasis on improving the quality of the parent-child relationship and changing parent-child interaction patterns. This therapy is done in an observation room where parents are coached by a therapist who is observing the parent child interaction and coaching via a “bug in the ear” of the parent.  Formal PCIT is 12-20 sessions. As a PCIT certified therapist, I offer some of the basic parenting skills to parents. I do not provide formal PCIT training which includes observation.

LPC Supervision

Supervision is a requirement for LPC interns who have completed a graduate program and are  pursuing professional licensure. Under the supervision of an LPC Supervisor, interns can gain experience and support while working in the field of counseling.  Supervision provides a protected space for interns to consult on challenging cases and explore new theoretical approaches to treatment. Supervision is conducted weekly on an individual or group basis.
